Yesterday, New CEO Paul Maritz annonced that VMware ESXi will be available for download at nost cost as of week of July 28, 2008. Today I have received a VMware VIP Partner Bulletin with confirmation. Yes, it's true.
Until monday, the price will stand for 459$.
I think we can expect same license model as it was with VMware Server {GSX}, which was released for free few years ago.
VMware ESXi has a small memory fingerprint, can be installed on USB flash drive, but consists of only the HyperVisor itself. There are no others CLI tools {can be download separatelly}, like in VMware ESX.
It's a very nice move, VMware. Strategic one.
Everyone can test the ESXi hypervisor, and if you want to have more, just buy VMware VirtualCenter and VMware Site Recovery Manager.
MS Hyper-V hypervisor can bite my shiny metal ass.
